Review Excerpts

LA Weekly

Karen Kaplan

I lunched at three restaurants with healthy food in mind. I wanted to like them, I wanted to have something to write about.....

But I only found one restaurant that I could recommend with a clear conscience. Ironically enough it specializes in macrobiotic cooking....
The review ends with a full turn about and Kaplan writing:
" I tell you, if East West Gardens were in Manhattan, I just might be macrobiotic today" see full review

Restaurant Life

Wayne Potter

For a natural foods restaurant to survive ( and to thrive) for over nine years is macro-miraculous, to say nothing of the, a macrobiotic phenomenon. East West Gardens has done it and, after dining there, I can see why. Peggy Steevensz , is one of the most imaginative food mavens in these parts. What she does with natural foods sans sugar, cholesterol, chemical additives and the rest of the junk we usually pump ion ourselves is a trump of the chefs talent….

If this is "health food," it would behoove us to take a closer look because, by all standards, it is also very fine gourmet dining...

Only a block from CBS , some very big name entertainers are regular visitors.see full review

Restaurant Review

Eliot Jay Rosen

Our Featured restaurant this issue can be described as nouvelle macrobiotics to coin a new phrase. It has none of the heavy handed macro-neurotic rigidity that sometimes characterized this philosophy of eating when it became popular in the sixties. The East West Gardens is very "contemporary LA in the eighties" due to primarily Peggy Steevensz...

It isn't only the food that makes the East West Gardens so special, it is the inner attitude of those that cook and serve it, ( the Zen of cooking?). Just as a house is not a home, a home being more that just a place to live, the EAst West Gardens is more than just a place to eat, It is an experience in healthy dining.see full review

Whole Life

Avotre Sante ( To Your Health) at 13016 San Vincent Blvd was recenty opened by owners, Nour Tillo, an interior designer and Peggy Steevensz, a veteran restauranteur. You may know Steevensz's name from her association with the popular macrobiotic eating spot, East West Gardens, located off Melrose.

Kathy, who has a hard time with natural foods but wants to improve her diet, praised her dinner. She commented there was a great combination of tastes on her plate. The tamale was filled with enchilada sauce, sunflower seeds and spices, The black beans were pressure cooked without fat. The soft shell taco contained grains, mixed vegetables and taco spices.

It's great to know about another that will pass the scrutiny of both my conscience and my taste buds!, be back agin for sure.see full review
